Task and starting point:

Our clients rented a separate two-storey building in a luxury residential complex in rough finish with the idea of opening a beer bar. The floor area of the building was 136 and 137 m2, not including the area of the stairwell. We were given the task to develop a project of the institution, which would accommodate about a hundred guests in the halls, the kitchen area should be allocated about 60 m2 and service area including the shop with kegs of beer about 30 m2. And one more difficult condition were - budget deficit and minimum terms of rent vacations - the project should provide for rapid realization with minimal funds. From preferences on materials - LDF and MDF in priority.
At the stage of drawing up the terms of reference, the designer proposed to increase the usable area of the premises on the 1st floor by erecting a mezzanine with service rooms, the ceiling height allows. The customers accepted the proposal, so the mezzanine floor appeared in the two-storey building.
So, we were able to design on the 1st floor:
The main hall for seating guests at tables for 4 persons’ bar table for 12 persons, and linear seating;
VIP-zone with a large sofa around the perimeter with the possibility to spend evenings as a single campaign, and individual guests;
A large bar almost 6 meters long with a cold chamber for beer kegs behind it;
A mini-room on the mezzanine floor for 20 guests with the possibility to equip it for artists (rock bands or DJs);
Checkroom with utility storage;
Office space on the mezzanine floor;
Bathrooms for a total of 5 persons.
Thus on the 1st floor together with mezzanine can accommodate 76 guests.
On the second floor we have made:
Kitchen on 55 square meters; Guest room with tables for 2, 4 and 8 persons; Cocktail bar; Bathrooms for 3 persons.
On the second floor it is possible to accommodate 39 guests and the total number of guests that can take the institution 115. The usable area of the institution after remodeling has increased by 39 m2. Read more about the second floor at the link.

About design solutions of the bar halls:

The facility welcomes guests with a spacious vestibule with a stairwell leading to the mezzanine hall and the second floor. Under the staircase we managed to place a checkroom with a hostess stand, as well as a hidden utility store. In front of the checkroom there is a banquette with a light installation of kegs on the wall for spectacular photos.

In the vestibule hall there are high mirrors with matting ornamentation made of solid squares to expand the illumination of the space with diffused light and for the comfort of guests. We kept the existing chrome pipe railings, they did not contradict the concept.
The center of attention in the first room of the gastro-bar is the mechanical scoreboard above the bar, on which every hour there is a change of price quotes for beer varieties, all evening the guests can participate in the auction. Under the scoreboard there is a large bar with a length of almost 6 meters. To the left there are two seats on the bar for guests who like cocktails and socializing with the bartender. And the furthest corner under the mezzanine floor on the right is ready to host a large group celebrating their evening or individual guests looking for a cozy corner. On the left, next to the boudoir area, there is a table for two with designer armchairs in black eco leather and velour, the white table has a chessboard pattern, and if you wish, you can play alco-chess for them. The same pattern is made on the long bar table.
Due to the limited ceiling height under the mezzanine, we eliminated overhead lighting for the seating area and focused on diffused lighting from backlights and functional lighting from mobile table lamps. Mirrored panels on the ceiling and shelf ends visually expand the space and multiply the illumination. The floors in the part under the mezzanine are painted in a colored pattern similar to the terazzo effect.
{ About design solutions of the bar halls }
We accented the concrete wall above the sofas with linear seating for guests with an installation of chaotically cut kegs with contour lighting and logos of the establishment in stainless steel color. Creating the composition, we imagined that the plane of the wall is a smooth sea of beer, and empty kegs float on this smooth sea, amber light symbolizes this sunny drink. Behind the sofas there are barley ears in tubs, referring us to the very origins of the beer-making process.
On the mezzanine level, the closed part with a decorative wall and a scoreboard is given over to the service needs, and on the right side there is a small room for guests. Access to it is from the stairwell, where we have also provided a large station for waiters for this floor. From the hall on the mezzanine level there is an excellent view of the main hall. It is possible to equip a part of the mezzanine hall for performances of musical groups or DJ, the furniture is easily removed to the service area through a hidden door.
A warm and cozy atmosphere on the mezzanine floor is created by the terracotta-orange color of the ceilings and burgundy-reddish commercial linoleum. The ceilings are covered with soft polystyrene ceiling tiles to improve the acoustic environment and safety.

Bathrooms:

The communal boudoir of the bathrooms at the entrance is greeted by a decorative installation of a vintage refrigerator front and a lighted bar logo draped in curtains. Another great location for Instagram photos. A service staircase rises to the right and a boudoir with sinks to the left.
The men's bathroom is decorated with small tiles in a checkerboard pattern that sets the atmosphere of retro restrooms in diners.

Construction Process:

In terms of renovations, this is one of our most technologically simple properties. We did not pay much attention to the finishing of walls, floors and ceilings and focused on furniture and lighting design and decoration. The most voluminous work at the stage of repair of the premises was the erection of the mezzanine on the 1st floor. The floors were poured industrial. Otherwise - painting walls, sealing concrete surfaces in matte varnish, building partitions, laying tiles - simple tasks. The renovation was carried out with full author's support, including kitting. For the first 2 months, 90% of the completion was done, and most of the purchases were made in the 1st month.
Despite the simplicity of interior solutions, there were a number of tasks arising in the process, which forced us to compromise between the project and the realities of the circumstances of the repair.
For example, the bar stools that we ordered immediately at the beginning of the renovation were delayed on their way to the country for an indefinite period of time, due to which they were promptly replaced by other models that did not contradict the concept of the institution. Also due to the limited budget it was decided to divide the implementation into several stages to the technical opening, all significant works, and to the official all decorative and additional elements of the interior and exterior. We optimized in the process of repair costs for certain materials and technologies in compliance with the budget and deadlines. We changed some of the performers because of insufficient level of competence.

It has been a great rich and interesting process, which is not over yet. Soon the facility will open its doors to guests, and we will all appreciate the result of our joint efforts.
We continued the story about the design of the second floor of THE TAP bar here.
